By Lucy Muigai, CEO of B Lab Africa
As a passionate advocate for sustainable and ethical business, I’ve always believed that our influence as business leaders extends far beyond the boardroom. The latest update from B Lab on the new standards for the impact topic, Government Affairs & Collective Action has struck a deep chord with me, because it challenges us all to reimagine what responsible corporate influence looks like.
B Lab’s shift towards clearer expectations in government affairs is both timely and necessary. For too long, corporate lobbying has been a murky area, often prioritising private interests over the public good. The new standard not only demands transparency around lobbying and political contributions but also encourages businesses to align their advocacy efforts with social and environmental responsibility. This is about more than ticking boxes; it’s about ensuring our influence uplifts rather than undermines the very communities we aim to serve.
Equally powerful is the emphasis on collective action. No single business, no matter how large or well-intentioned, can solve the systemic challenges we face, from climate change to inequality, alone. The call to collaborate across sectors and champion policies that promote social and environmental impact is exactly the kind of leadership we need right now.
What I find particularly encouraging is that B Lab’s new standards don’t just set the bar higher, they inspire us to step into our role as change agents, using our platforms to drive systemic transformation. It’s a reminder that the path to a more equitable and sustainable future isn’t just about internal operations; it’s about how we engage with governments, policymakers, and each other.
For me, this is a call to action. As leaders, we must embrace this challenge and ask ourselves: Are we using our influence responsibly? Are we transparent in our advocacy? Are we willing to work together for the common good?
B Lab’s new standards remind us that the answers to these questions matter more than ever. Let’s rise to the occasion and build a business community that truly champions collective action for lasting change.
Join me in reflecting on your own organisation’s impact. How is your business using its voice to advocate for a more sustainable and equitable world? Let’s commit to transforming our influence into a force for good.
